What we are looking for

We’re looking for a Director of Finance to develop and lead all finance efforts for CornerUp including FP&A, accounting, and financial operations. You’ll be working closely with our CEO and COO and will provide tactical and strategic support in all aspects of our finances. The successful candidate will have 5-7 years of managerial accounting and operational finance management experience in a rapidly growing start-up environment. This role will be ever changing and will require the candidate to be flexible and open-minded, while paying close attention to detail and processes. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow into a VP of Finance as the company grows.

What you’ll do

  • Develop financial operations. You’ll ensure that the team incorporates financial controls and considerations into relevant day-to-day operations and decision-making, product planning, advocating for finance, and product profitability where it makes sense, with a particular focus on developing a methodology and process for tracking and improving fulfilled gross margin, incorporating key inputs from cross-functional partners

  • Oversee accounting. You’ll work with our accountants to close our books in a timely, efficient manner. You’ll develop and maintain necessary accounting policies and systems and build an accounting department as the company grows. You’ll overseeing transactions related to the general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll and financial reporting

  • Own FP&A. You’ll help us set and achieve our revenue and budget targets and relevant goals, develop tools to provide critical information to the leadership team and relevant stakeholders to improve our decision-making, monitor and share core performance metrics, manage payroll and benefits. 

  • Manage AP/AR manager and outside vendors

  • Interact with the board of directors

  • Provide strategic guidance around capital financing options to support the startup’s growth. Develop the corporate fundraising strategy and manage relationships with partners and investors

  • Oversee and manage the company’s finance IT system and choose appropriate software programs & processes based on unique needs

  • Oversee stock administration

  • Coordinate corporate tax reporting and preparation of tax returns with outside tax accountants

  • Represent the company externally, as necessary, particularly in banking and lease negotiations

  • Manage internal and external teams by setting expectations, training internal staff accountants and developing training modules and templates

Who are we looking for?

  • 5+ years of related experience in a venture-backed, high-growth start-up that they helped scale and where they helped build new systems from scratch

  • Bachelor’s degree required; concentration in accounting or finance preferred

  • CPA, Big 4, and/or recent experience scaling a finance team from inception to $10 million+ in annual revenues or 75+ full-time employees preferred

  • Retail or e-commerce experience required

  • Proven track record of working with cross-functional partners to use the finance team to define metrics, set goals, track progress, and drive operational improvements 

  • Strong knowledge of corporate finance and other accounting theory, principles and practices to include GAAP, SaaS accounting, prepaid expenses & accrued revenue, ASC 605: Revenue Recognition, ASC 985-605: Software Revenue Recognition, ASC 805: Business Combinations and ASC 718: Stock-Based Compensation

  • Solid experience with financial analysis and forecasting, including experience with three statement financial modeling, preparing statistical reports and making recommendations based on analysis and research

  • Mastery knowledge of Microsoft Office; accounting software including QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Expensify and Bill.com; and budgeting software such as Grow, Domo, and Spotlight

  • Comfort in the startup environment (i.e., sometimes chaotic and lacking structure) and able to create structure and foundational accounting processes

  • Strong priority management skills

  • Proven experience leading, managing and hiring a team

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
